PLAYING IN INDIA IS A GREAT EXPERIENCE:AQEEL

By Grand Slam

NEW DELHI, October 6 (www.dsclopentennis.com)- For Aqeel Khan, it was a pleasant surprise when the organisers of the 13th DSCL Open National Tennis Championship invited him along with Nomi Qamar. When the 24-year-old talks of Indian tennis standards being higher, he means it. Aqeel shares his thoughts in an exclusive interview with www.dsclopentennis.com.

Q: What was your first reaction when you were invited for the DSCL Open?
A: I am very happy that I got this chance to come here since I have a lot of respect for Indian tennis. This is not my first visit to India, so I knew what  the conditions would be like.

Q: If you were to sum up your experiences of having come to India, what would they be?
A: It is a very nice experience whenever I come to India. As you are aware, there are very few international tournaments at home, and I look forward to  coming to India as it is very easy to travel here and does not cost too much.

Q: How would you compare the standard of tennis between the two nations?
A: I think India has very talented players. When I came to India for the Satellite, I never knew I would do so well. In fact, I needed a wild card to get in. Allah was kind and I did well here. I would say, my success story began in India.

Q: Is tennis a popular sport in Pakistan?
A: Tennis is not really popular in Pakistan and we do strive to do well in the Davis Cup. We have a few good players like Aisam Qureshi, but cricket and hockey are our main sport.

Q: Is it easy to find sponsors in Pakistan?
A: Not at all. My federation has supported me but if I want to travel to places farther away, I need sponsorship from the private sector. Of course, I must mention the relation between the Indian and Pakistani tennis federations is very good.

Q: What about the level of tournaments in Pakistan?
A: I must tell you that Pakistan has decided to postpone the National claycourt tennis championship because Nomi and I were invited by the DSCL. Now, we will have our own championship only after Ramzan.

Q: How would you see an India-Pakistan contest in the Davis Cup?
A: I think it will not happen in 2005, but yes it would be a fantastic tie. I think the more we play each other, we (Pakistan)stand to gain. Not many are aware that Indian coaches come and help out our juniors and they definitely gain from it.

Q: What's the biggest learning experience from your tours to India?
A: I have no hesitation in saying playing in India has helped me immensely. My game has improved, my fitness level is at peak and I am enjoying my tennis thoroughly. It's all thanks to my India trips.
