KRISHNA,SURESH,VIJAYANT SCORE UPSET VICTORIES

NEW DELHI, December 23

Andhra Pradesh s Krishna AS Suresh defeated fourth-seeded GP Pranjesh (Tamil Nadu) 6-1, 7-6 (1) to pull off the biggest upset of the day and enter the boys under-14 singles quarterfinals at the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.In the top half of the draw No. 10 Vijayant Mallik (Chandigarh) beat fifth seed Jairaj Desai (Maharashtra) 6-3, 6-1 to provide the second surprise on a day that wasjust as chilly and saw the bystanders wrapped in layers of clothing ¡V with hands in pockets, if not in gloves V while the players sweat it out on court.

It must be said Pranjesh was playing his third match of the day, having won a round each in the boys: under-16 and under-14 draws earlier. Kinshuk Sharma and Peter Agnel Gladwin were the only ones to come through victorious in three starts on Tuesday, moving into the quarterfinals of both the boys sections.

The girls: under-14 draw saw Delhi players send three lesser seeds from Andhra Pradesh crashing out. Sanjana Kapoor defeated No. 7 Niroshita Madanala after losing the first set and Shalini Sahoo defeated No. 8 Prerna Mythry 6-4, 6-3 in the second round while wildcard entrant Karina Ahuja beat No. 6 Sushrutha Reddy late on Monday evening.Karina had a chance to script another upset win over the top-seeded Parija Maloo (Maharashtra) in the under-16 second round when she was serving 40-15 at 4-2 in the third set and again 40-15 at 5-5. She was unable to seal the victory and lost 5-7 to the slightly-built girl from Kamgaon in Maharashtra.

Qualifier Honey Rana as well as Pooja Shree Venkatesh and Neha Rana who caused upsets in the opening round of the boys under-16 and girls under-16 draw on Monday, continued their winning ways and are now in the respective quarterfinals.
